Can the Anti Cigarette Law in England Take Bingo Players On to the Net?

Much has been reported in the press recently about the bingo industry struggling as a consequence of the cigarette ban in England. Conditions have become so awful that in Scotland the Bingo industry has asked for huge tax breaks to assist in keeping the businesses from going bankrupt. However does the net variation of this traditional game provide a salvation, or will it in no way compare to its real life equivalent?

Bingo has been an age old game usually enjoyed by the "blue rinse" generation. Although the game of late had experienced a recent increase in acceptance with younger men and women opting to hit the bingo parlours instead of the bars on a Friday night. This is all about to get flipped on its head with the introduction of the cigarette ban throughout England and Wales.

No longer will players be permitted to puff on cigarettes at the same time marking off their numbers. From the summer of 2007 every public area will not be permitted to allow smoking in their buildings and this includes Bingo parlors, which are possibly the most popular places where many people enjoy smoking.

The outcome of the anti smoking law can already be seen in Scotland where cigarettes are already not permitted in the bingo halls. Profits have dropped and the industry is absolutely fighting for its life. But where did the players go? Surely they haven't given up on this classic game?

The answer is on the internet. Players realise that they can participate in bingo using their computer at the same time enjoying a drink and fag and still have a chance at monstrous jackpots. This is a recent anomaly and has timed itself almost perfectly with the ban on smoking.

Of course playing on the web could never replace the social portion of going down to the bingo hall, but for a demographic of people the governing edicts have left a number of bingo enthusiasts with little alternative.
